So I was doing a freelance video on my old 2005 masterpiece of a computer known only as "The Beast" the past few weeks...and I noticed it acting a bit sluggish. After over 3 years of movie making magic, I figured it was time to put it out to pasture. After seeing some of my coworkers get refurbished macs, I decided to invest in one. Enter the 8 core!
So far, it's been a dream come true. I keep throwing random 3D layers and particles at it and so far it just mocks my attempts and renders them out in no time flat. I will be doing some render tests over the weekend with some of my old projects from work to see just how much faster it is.
Before I go, I wanted to give a shout out to my friend Jason Smithers over at theworstblogger.com . He gave me one earlier today and I figured I'd let everyone know that he, much like myself, is awesome. One look at the pictures on the top of his blog and you'll agree.

Last year around this time, I was working at a TV station
full time, taking a few classes and volunteering at CedarCreek. With all that, I was fortunate enough to be
able to attend some planning meetings for the Easter service. There was a lot of talk about a video to a
song a larger church did at their previous Easter service called Crimson. Since we were unable to get a copy of it, I
ended up doing a version of it. With
inspiration coming directly from the 300 end credits, a silhouette Garden of
Eden was created. Back then it was one
of my favorites…but watching it now I get kind of bored.
Because I dropped an external hard drive with the only
backup, this year I’m recreating Crimson…only better! The tree will be cooler looking, the leaves
will actually be apple tree leaves instead those of a maple, and the text won’t
be done in less than an hour. Here’s the
version from last year. After Easter, I’ll
post the new one so the three of you that read this can compare it.

Sometimes with all the lyric videos we do it's hard to keep them fresh. I've had plenty of songs where I just can't think of a good visual theme to go along with them. Last week with the song God of this City by Chris Tomlin, I saw his CD art and immediately concluded I wanted to do a video that looked like it. It had a skyline with the sky an orangish color and a grungy texture on top. I ended up tracing a bunch of buildings in pictures of city skylines and dropping a paper texture over the top of my video. Take a look!

So, about a month ago, a coworker of mine clued me in to a
contest at an area radio station. They’re
looking for a commercial that promotes them as the “Only New Rock Alternative.” I’m about to get started on it sometime in
the next few days, as it’s due March 9th at 5:00. What is the
prize you ask? A Macbook Pro with Final Cut
as well as 2 Tickets to the Sundance Film Festival 2009. Will I win?
Who knows…I’m guessing all the good people are waiting until the last
day to post theirs.
Wish me luck!

Last September, CedarCreek did a series called “Religiously
Transmitted Diseases.” This was a fun
series for me because After Effects CS3 had arrived in the middle of the
previous series so this was the first intro that I was able to use new effects,
such as the puppet tool. After much
trial and error, I figured out how to get decent looking movement out of the
tool on pictures of bacteria, which looked pretty cool in motion. Still to this day it’s one of my favorite
series intros.
Fast forward to the middle of February, 2008. I received an e-mail from the Causeway Coast
Vineyard church in Northern Ireland. They wanted the series intro and graphics for
their own RTD series. I was able to hook
them up with what they needed. They start
their series this weekend and I look forward to hearing how things go for
them.
Here’s the video they’re using.

Now, I’ll be honest…blogs don’t really seem appealing to me,
but my brothers started doing it and seem to be having a good time. I just wanted a chance to put up more awesome
pictures of Optimus Prime. Just wait
until my real banner is done! It shall
be epic!
This will most likely end up as a place for me to post about
what I’m learning in After Effects, things that I find exciting in motion graphics,
movies that I do and don’t like and maybe a bit about my job at CedarCreek
Church from time to time. I don’t want
to get into spirited philosophical debates or start discussing political views
on this site, so if those topics come up I will immediately change the subject
to me…cause I’m awesome.
Check back soon, as I will try to update at least twice a
week.
